ZomMr. Zom graduated from Delft University in The Netherlands with a Master degree in Aerospace Engineering before turning his attention to consulting with positions at Accenture and other management consultants. He joined ARN Advisory at the beginning of 2009 and has specialized in recycling system management and supply chains. Projects Mr. Zom has worked on include the design and implementation of the national Dutch vehicle scrapping scheme in 2009, the design and implementation of a national recycling system for mopeds and strategic advice to the superyacht builders industry association in Monaco, France. He has been involved in extensive knowledge transfer missions with Canada, Turkey, China, Bulgaria, Switzerland and other countries.

Photo: Minoku GoukoMinoru Gouko is Acting Director of JARA (Japan Automotive Recyclers Association) and a professor at Nihon Automobile College, a prestigious college in Japan specializing in the mechanical engineering of automobiles and motorcycles. Minoru is pleased to announce that JARA is the recipient of the "Energy Globe Award" once again! He has extensive teaching experience as an automotive engineer in Japan and in developing countries under the Japanese government and the United Nations. His well balanced knowledge in the automotive field is highly respected.  He is working hard to educate developing countries, where there is a high volume of imported vehicles from Japan, to adopt modern vehicle recycling practices. He is also an Advisor of MAARA (Malaysia Automotive Recyclers Association) and an Honorary Advisor of the Philippine Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association.

WilsonIn July, 2007, the Automotive Recyclers Association's (ARA) Executive Committee proudly announced former staff member, Michael Wilson, was returning as the new ARA Executive Vice President.  In October 2010, Wilson's hard work was rewarded with the new job of Chief Executive Officer.  One of the most demanding and successful challenges that Wilson has faced at ARA was the $3 billion United States' Cash for Clunkers program initiated in July 2009. Wilson has also been a leading voice of automotive recyclers in Washington, the United States and around the globe.   He has also represented several other associations in Washington, bringing experience in legislative and regulatory activity along with a wealth of knowledge of the automotive recycling industry.

Photo: Krista FriesenKrista Friesen is an expert in stewardship issues. Since starting at Summerhill in 2008, she has closely followed the development of stewardship programs and regulations across a number of product categories, in a number of jurisdictions. Krista is responsible for researching, writing and defending the only two successfully approved Industry Stewardship Plans (ISPs) to date under Ontario's Waste Diversion Act. In addition to writing the Ontario ISPs for mercury-containing thermostats and appliance switches, Krista is also responsible for expanding Switch the 'Stat, a stewardship program for thermostats that started as a voluntary initiative in 2006, to a national scope that now meets provincial EPR regulations in three Canadian provinces (Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba). Krista oversees Switch Out, a national program designed to remove and collect mercury switches from end-of-life vehicles, which is funded by the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association and the Canadian Steel Producers Association to meet their Pollution Prevention obligations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Krista has also been involved in the creation and delivery of a number of consumer-facing take-back campaigns for electronics and other residential waste in partnership with various retailers, stewardship agencies and manufacturers. Krista graduated from the University of Toronto in 1997 and has been working in the environment sector since. Prior to working at Summerhill, Krista managed Pollution Probe's mercury program and was the author or co-author of three reports that examined the options for phasing out, reducing and recycling mercury-containing products.

Photo: Jamessee MoultonJamessee Moulton was born in Frobisher Bay, NWT (now known as Iqaluit, Nunavut). He graduated from Dalhousie University in 2006 with a Bachelors Degree in Biochemistry. In 2007 Jamessee returned to his home town of Iqaluit where he has been working for the Government of Nunavut's Department of Environment (DOE) on a variety of environmental initiatives. In 2010 he was involved in the development of a Household Hazardous Waste Management course designed for remote northern communities which won the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrator's Environment Award for Municipalities under 20,000 people. He currently manages the Air Quality Program and the Solid Waste Program for the DOE, including the recent End-of-Life Vehicle Recovery Pilot Project.

Colin J. P. McKean, M.Sc., R.P.Bio., is a freshwater biologist by trade and has been working in the field of environmental management for 33 years. Colin specializes in the development and implementation of Environmental Management Systems such as ISO 14001, Environmental Stewardship Programs for industry and their products and Pollution Prevention Programs for industry and industrial sectors. During his career, Colin has worked with the BC Ministrys of Environment for 19 years in a variety of positions. At the end of his Government career, Colin managed the development and implementation of product stewardship programs for household products including: pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fuels and solvents and industrial pollution prevention programs for large industrial sites. Now as a consultant, Colin is working with a number of industry sectors to develop a variety of industry stewardship and product stewardship programs. Currently, Colin is the Executive Director of the Automotive Recyclers Environmental Association and is responsible for the development of the Environmental Program for automotive recyclers in BC. In addition, Colin is the Executive Director of the Canadian Battery Association and is responsible for developing a national product stewardship program for lead acid batteries. Finally, Colin has worked closely with the Automotive Recyclers of Canada developing the Environmental Code of Practice and helping with its national implementation.

Claude Bourque, a research and planning agent (paints and oils programs),
holds a chemical engineering degree and has worked for more than 20 years in the private sector, before joining RECYC-QUÉBEC's team in 2007. He possesses a wide expertise in process and environmental engineering and has since specialized in the management and recycling of residual materials. He is responsible for the review of both Eco-Peinture and SOGHU annual performance reports. In addition, he provides technical support to the group on questions dealing with technological aspects of electronic waste, automobiles, residual hazardous material, batteries and mercury lamps recovery and recycling.

Photo: Steve FletcherSteve Fletcher is currently the Executive Director of the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association, a 180 member industry association, and Managing Director of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada association, an umbrella group of seven recycling associations representing 420 auto recyclers. ARC had the pleasure of winning the Automotive Recyclers Association's (ARA) Star Award as Affiliate Chapter of the Year in 2008 and 2010, and being named one of three Trendsetters of the Year at the 2010 ARA Convention. He has been involved in the auto recycling industry since 1992. Steve has a B.Sc in Biology from the University of Waterloo, and an MBA from The University of Western Ontario. He resides in London, Ontario with his wife Gail and two children, Ben and Iris.

Photo: Mark NantaisMr. Nantais was appointed President of the CVMA in January 1994 overseeing the operation of the organization and its 16 standing committees on a national basis. As President, with 27 years of experience in the automotive industry, he has the responsibility for the development of policy and the overall strategic direction of the Association representing Canada's largest manufacturers of motor vehicles. Prior to joining the CVMA in 1984, he was an employee of the Ontario Government for several years with the Office of the Ombudsman and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Mr. Nantais is a graduate in biological and environmental studies, with continued study in computer science and systems analysis. During his tenure he has taken lead responsibility for the membership's activities in the areas of engineering, environmental performance, alternative fuels and energy efficiency, in addition to industrial relations, occupational health and safety, and standards harmonization (nationally and internationally). Mr. Nantais has served as the automotive industry representative on several federal and provincial government's consultative groups regarding Climate Change and was one of two auto industry executives that negotiated the industry's voluntary agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the vehicle fleet by 5.3 million tones in 2010. He has previously participated as a member of Canada's delegation to the negotiation of the Canadian-U.S. Transboundary Agreement on ground level ozone transport.

Photo: Ron WatkinsRon Watkins was appointed President of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA)/l'Association canadienne des producteurs d'acier (ACPA) in 2006. The CSPA is the national organization for Canada's primary steel industry, which produces some $14 billion of steel annually at member facilities in five provinces. Prior to joining the CSPA, Mr. Watkins had a 33-year career in the government of Canada. Since 1982, he worked in a variety of capacities within Industry Canada, most recently as the Director General of the industry sector branches for the automotive, aerospace, and defence industries. Prior to this, Mr. Watkins headed the International Business Branch, and the sector branches for the service industries and the information technology industry sectors. Mr. Watkins also served from 1991-1993 as Program Director, Strategy Projects with IBM Corporation in Armonk, New York as part of a business-government executive exchange program. Mr. Watkins is a graduate in economics from Trent University (B.A. Hon.) and Carleton University (M.A.). He also completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School in 1990.

Photo: David Creighton AdamsBorn and raised in Toronto, David Adams was appointed President of the AIAMC in March 2005 becoming the first person ever to be employed by both of Canada's leading associations representing the automobile manufacturers and distributors in Canada. Prior to his appointment as president of the AIAMC, he worked for 18 years in increasingly responsible positions with the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, which he joined in 1987 as Manager, Committees. He was appointed Director, Policy Development in 1994, and was made Vice President, Policy in February 1999. David's primary responsibilities within the CVMA were in the areas of trade, economics, taxation, social welfare and consumer issues. Prior to joining the CVMA, he was involved with two automotive fleet leasing companies. David has a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in economics and psychology, from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. David's particular interests lie in the development and facilitation of alternative dispute resolution programs for the industry, and he has been involved in the creation of both the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP) and the National Automobile Dealer Arbitration Program (NADAP). David is also a regular columnist in Canadian Auto Dealer and past contributor to Canadian Autoworld, both monthly trade magazines for the Canadian automotive industry. David resides in Toronto with his wife Julie.

He holds a BSc in physical metallurgy, an MSc in process metallurgy and a Doctorate in stress corrosion; all from the University of Wales, Swansea College. He worked two years with the British Steel Corporation in Britain before returning to Canada. He worked for ALCAN from 1974 to 1977 as assistant to the Vice-President, Patents and Trademarks. He joined the Federal Department of Supply and Services in 1977 as a science procurement officer buying R&D from the private sector. In 1989 he moved to the Department of Industry and until September 1995 was the Director of the group responsible for all primary and secondary metal, metal fabrication and mineral-based construction products industries. In September 1995 he joined Canadian Association of Recycling Industries as the Executive Director with responsibility for the day-to-day management of all business affairs of the Association.

Corey is the incoming Executive Director of Summerhill Impact. For the past 3 years, Corey acted as President and Chief Transformer of Summerhill, responsible for day-to-day business activities and business development for the company. A graduate of the University of Waterloo's Environment and Resource Studies department, Corey cemented his passion for the environment through paid and unpaid gigs with Pollution Probe, Green Tourism Association, Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy and Greenest City. In 2004, Corey joined Summerhill, and has initiated and managed several high profile environmental campaigns for retailers and utilities across Canada. Corey currently serves as a Director of the Ontario Forestry Association, and has been a featured speaker, motivator and environmental enthusiast on several continents. Corey is an avid sports fan, music collector, reader and traveler. Corey's biggest passion is spending time hugging trees with his daughter Savannah.
